The brochure is supplemented with two articles published in the press. They contain some comparative assessments and confrontations of the new and old (Monarchical or Republican) Bulgarian orders. The Act Changing Decree No.1094 on the Spiritual Stimulation in the People’s Republic of Bulgaria, promulgated in the State Gazette, issue 27 from April 5, 1991, cancelled the orders of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria, but for those intended to award foreign citizens: the Order of Stara Planina, the Order of the Madara Horseman, and the Order of the Rose, which, since July 15, 1994, were also awarded to Bulgarian citizens with great merit for the Republic of Bulgaria. These were cancelled by Decree No.230 from June 9, 2003.

The orders and medals in the Republic of Bulgaria and their statute are adopted by acts passed by the National Assembly (the Parliament). They are served by the President of the Republic under the terms provided by the appropriate act. Together with the orders and medals, the awarded persons obtain order or medal books sealed with the Seal of State. The awarded persons are recorded in the Register of Awarded Persons which is kept at the President’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria.
